Everywhere we go these days there are signs posted about cell phone usage. One of my favorites is at the post office. The sign yells “no cell phone calls during transaction.” So I found it really interesting the other day when the postal clerk picked up her cell phone and called home while she was in the middle of my business transaction.

And she was still on the phone when the next customer stepped up to the counter.Don’t those signs apply to her? Is this one of those do as I say, not as I do? Seems that way.

This could be happening in your business too. Make sure the message you are sending to your customers matches what you are doing. There is no alternative to regular postal mail, so I’m stuck. But your customers can always go elsewhere. Don’t send them there.

The post office drives me crazy! Although I guess that’s pretty typical of many government run institutions. Good reflections on how it could apply to small businesses, one thought that came to my mind was the golden rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Seems like a pretty safe bet as a guide to our customer interactions.

    Hi Denise, very funny!
I’ve been in this kind of situation recently, with my two little sons. In a library!! Can you imagine? We could see a ” no cell” sign every single place it was possible to put one, I guess for the visitors, and I was glad to explain to my sons how it’s important to keep silent in a library, always, to respect people around, that come to read and work…until we see the librarian running between the rows, screaming in her cell, as if she was trying to solve a major problem !!!

I think I’ve lost some credibility this time, with my sons … And if they don’t respect the rules in a library someday, maybe someone near will decree their Mom never took the time to teach them !!

@Danye That is truyly sad. No wonder so many kids these days don’t believe what we tell them. This type of thing is rampant. It’s the old “do as I say, not as I do.” Ugh!
